Spring Cleaning – for Smiles!

One Family’s Tag Sales Generate Smiles – and $125,000 – for Save the Children

According to Michelle Daum, it all started 15 years ago when her daughter Carly generously donated her bat mitzvah gifts to Save the Children. Next, younger daughter Justine did the same. Later, the family wanted to see their donations at work, so they traveled to see one of Save the Children's U.S. programs, deep in a remote Appalachian coal-mining community. They were so deeply moved, they wanted to do more.

The Daum family did some serious spring cleaning, and encouraged their town of Larchmont, NY to do the same. They organized 13 annual community tag sales, and donated the proceeds to Save the Children. Today, the tag sales have been going for more than a decade, and have raised an impressive $125,000.

They've also visited more Save the Children programs over the years – the most recent in Ethiopia, where the family witnessed Save the Children-trained community health workers at work preventing newborn deaths.

"I think about a child's smile. A hungry child, a sick child doesn't smile,” said Michelle Daum, Save the Children donor and champion for children. “Save the Children's programs cause a lot of smiles."

"The programs we have seen in the field have been deeply inspiring. They reach the children in need with the provision of basic tools, such as a loan of $150 to a mother to begin a weaving business so that she can support her children," said Daum.

Special thanks to the Daum family, who is changing the lives of countless children. Now that’s truly something to smile about.
