Save the Children Statement on the Domestic Supplemental Announcement

Washington, D.C. (Oct. 27, 2023) - Save the Children welcomes the recent announcement of the domestic supplemental package, which includes $16 billion for child care stabilization grants. This funding is a critical step toward addressing the urgent needs of child care providers and the millions of children and families who depend on their services. We commend the administration for its commitment to investing in the future of our nation by prioritizing child care as a critical component of the domestic supplemental package.

"The administration has heard what parents, providers, and advocates have been saying for months about the need for investments in child care," said Christy Gleason, Vice President of Policy at Save the Children. "Yesterday, the administration announced a proposal for a supplemental domestic spending package that would include substantial investments in child care. This is a crucial recognition of the vital role child care plays in our society and the importance of investing in our children's future.”

The proposed package extends the stabilization grants for child care providers that we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that this lifeline continues to support hard-working child care providers across the country. These funds are projected to reach hundreds of thousands child care providers and positively impact the lives of millions of children in every state. This funding is essential to support hard-working child care providers, enable parents to return to the workforce, and ensure children have access to high-quality early education.

In addition to supporting robust funding levels for early education programs in the FY24 appropriations process, we urge Congress to take action and support the child care investments in the domestic supplemental package proposed by the administration. This is vital to ensuring children have a bright future and access to the care and education they deserve.
