Help Save Children in Nicaragua
Living in one of the poorest countries in Latin America, the people of Nicaragua have limited access to healthcare and education. One-third of all Nicaraguan children never enroll in elementary school, fail to attend or drop out before reaching the sixth grade. Many children drop out in first grade, before they learn the reading and math skills they need to succeed in life. With the support of caring people like you, our teams in Nicaragua are helping children stay in school and learn more while they are there.
The Challenge for Children in Nicaragua
Living in poverty – many becoming parents at too young an age – Nicaraguan children need your help.*
- Only 78% of girls 15 and older are literate
- 10% of school-age children are out of school
22 out of 1000 children die
before their 5th birthday
- 30% of people live in poverty
Our Work for Children in Nicaragua
Since 1980, Save the Children has worked to improve the lives of Nicaraguan children and families living in poverty. After the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, Save the Children Nicaragua concentrated its efforts in the heavily affected departments of Chinandega and Leon.
In addition to education and emergency response, Save the Children’s staff focuses on improving maternal, infant, and child healthcare, working in partnership with the Ministry of Health to reach thousands of children living in remote and rural communities. Our generous donors help support important health programs such as monitoring growth rates, vaccinations, distributing vitamins, and educating young people about proper hygiene and sanitation. Our health experts train community health workers to treat the most common childhood diseases including diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia.
- Protected 7,678 children from harm
- Supported 102,874 children in times of crisis
- Provided 642,584 children with a healthy start in life
