Honoring Barbara

Barbara was the kind of upbeat, positive person who always looked for the good in other people. “When you get in the habit of sharing, and giving and loving,” she told the crowd that gathered for her 70th birthday, “it washes off to the next person, and the world becomes a better place.”

Earlier, that same day, she had shared an idea with her husband, Malcolm, “Let’s turn gift-giving into a way that can improve the lives of kids.” They decided to invite family and friends to donate to Save the Children in honor of her birthday. Sadly, Barbara died just 8 days later, but her memory lives on in the generosity of her friends and family who donated.

“If you can do a little bit of good… that carries forward,” Barbara’s son Martin said. “That was how my Mom lived.”

Every day more than 15,000 children die before their fifth birthday (mostly from preventable causes). But it doesn’t have to be this way. By donating your birthday to Save the Children, you can buy children lifesaving antibiotics, shelter or food for children in need.

With more help from generous people like Barbara, more children can live to see their next birthday.
