How Sponsorship Works
Transforming Children's Lives
Sponsorship gives children the gift of brighter futures – one child at a time. Save the Children achieves lasting impact for children through partnerships and provides tools that empower entire communities to better support their children’s health, education, protection and growth – breaking the cycle of poverty for generations to come. As a Sponsor, you provide encouragement and hope for your sponsored child through your messages, birthday cards and so much more. The simple act of sending a message brings unimaginable happiness to your sponsored child. In fact, many children tell us that hearing from their sponsors is a highlight of their friendship. When a child knows they have someone on their side, they can be inspired to dream big!
Meet some of our sponsored children and read their success stories.
In 2015, 183,000 sponsors like you supported programs that directly benefited more than 2.8 million children in 23 countries around the world – including the United States. Thanks to our growing community of child sponsors, we increased our impact and reach – helping 29% more children than we did in 2014.
For less than a $1 a day, you can change the life of a child by becoming a child sponsor.
How Sponsorship Helps
Through the power of Sponsorship, you help ensure a child in need has the best chance for success – with a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. Our innovative Sponsorship programs address the unique needs of children where they live.
- Healthy Moms and Babies
Giving mothers and babies a healthy start in life.
The first years of a child’s life are the most critical – and dangerous. Despite remarkable progress in child survival, nearly 6 million children under age 5 still die each year, mostly from preventable or treatable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. Thanks to you, we’re doing whatever it takes to ensure access to lifesaving health care, right from the start, so babies and their mothers can survive and thrive.
- Healthy Girls and Boys
Staying healthy to learn, learning to stay healthy.
Children can’t reach their full potential if they’re not in school and learning. Yet millions of children each year are missing out on education due to preventable illnesses caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation and unhealthy diet. Thanks to sponsors like you, we’re addressing these barriers and teaching children lifelong health, hygiene and nutrition habits they can use in school and at home for years to come.
- Early Learners
Building the foundation for success in school.
All children deserve to grow and learn. Yet about half of young children around the world don’t have the chance to build the physical, intellectual, social and emotional skills that form the foundation for learning. Because of sponsors like you, girls and boys can have access to the early care and development they need, both at home and within their communities, so they’re ready to succeed in school and life.
- Successful Students
Learning today for a better tomorrow.
Every child deserves a quality education. But more than 50 million of the world’s children each year never even set foot in a classroom. And 130 million more still can’t read after years of schooling. Through school and community based reading, writing and math programs, you help us ensure children are in school, protected and learning – providing the best chance for a successful future.
- Empowered Teens
Building skills for a brighter future.
Adolescence is a time of intense change, which shapes future opportunities. Without support, young people around the world can make decisions that will compromise their futures, like dropping out of school or becoming a teen parent. Because of your generosity, we’re able to help adolescents build lasting life and work skills, so they can positively transition to adulthood — building a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
- Innovation spans across all programs. Sponsorship nurtures great ideas – helping program staff develop interventions that best meet children's needs. For example, Literacy Boost started as a program specific to child sponsorship and was able to grow into a signature Save the Children program used in 24 countries.
