CHANGING A LIFE LASTS A LIFETIME
Every good deed on behalf of a child starts a ripple of change – changing the lives of children, families and entire communities.
100 YEARS OF CHANGE FOR CHILDREN
Thanks to supporters like you, we’ve been doing whatever it takes for children in need for 100 years, reaching over 1 billion children! It all began in 1919, when our founder, Eglantyne Jebb, launched a pioneering campaign to save suffering children across war-torn Europe. A cause that soon became the first global movement for children. Her fearless spirit and bold vision continue to drive our work today. Join us.

Our 100-Year History: A Timeline
Charismatic. Fiercely intelligent. Influential. Save the Children’s founder, Eglantyne Jebb, was one of the world’s most passionate champions of children’s rights. Meet our founder. A century later, her legacy continues. Explore the highlights.
CHILDREN HAVE RIGHTS
Our story began in 1919, when Eglantyne Jebb stood up in downtown London for World War I’s suffering children, a cause that soon became the first global children’s charity. She went on to write the historic Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted by the League of Nations in 1924.
IN America SINCE 1932
Our U.S. work began with the distribution of hot meals, warm clothing and school supplies for children in Appalachia hard hit by the Great Depression. In 1940, we introduced child sponsorship to help orphans and children displaced by World War II.
CHANGING CHILDREN’S LIVES
We were the first global aid agency allowed into Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. In 1989, the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, based on Jebb’s vision for children. We are at the forefront of global efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality.
EVERY DAY AND IN CRISIS
We were there for America’s children after Hurricane Katrina and every major U.S. crisis since – including Hurricanes Harvey, Maria and Irma in 2017. We’re on the ground in Syria as children endure 8 years of war, and we help the Rohingya fleeing Myanmar.
NOW AND BEYOND
So far we’ve changed the lives of over 1 billion children! Our ambition is to ensure ALL children grow up healthy, learning and safe by the year 2030. Together with supporters like you, we will deliver on our vision for children. SEE FULL TIMELINE
