War in Ukraine: Children Still Need Urgent Help
Four years of full-scale war have shattered children’s lives in Ukraine. Children have been forced from their homes and schools, lost loved ones and lived with the constant fear of air raid alerts, drones and explosions.
Recent attacks underscore how dangerous daily life remains. In July 2026, 183 children were killed or injured, the highest monthly number of child casualties in more than four years. In July and August combined, 310 children were killed or injured, the highest total recorded over a two-month period in the past four years.
Children and families continue to face danger in the places where they should feel safest, including their homes, schools and communities. Save the Children and our local partners are providing protection, education, mental health support and essential assistance to help children survive, recover and keep learning.

What is the current situation for children in Ukraine?
After more than four years of full-scale war, children in Ukraine continue to face a deepening humanitarian crisis. Children have been forced from their homes and schools, separated from loved ones and exposed to the constant threat of air raid alerts, drones and explosions. In 2026, an estimated 2.2 million children in Ukraine need humanitarian assistance.

How is the war in Ukraine affecting children's education and mental health?
The war continues to severely disrupt children's education. About 865,000 children are no longer receiving full-time, in-person education because they live near the front line or their schools lack equipped bomb shelters.
Schools and kindergartens have also been damaged, while air raid alerts repeatedly interrupt learning. Save the Children repairs schools and kindergartens, equips protective shelters and supports Digital Learning Centers and catch-up learning so children can continue their education when their regular classrooms are damaged or unsafe.
Years of war, displacement and repeated exposure to violence are taking a serious toll on children's mental health. An estimated 1.5 million children are at risk of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental health conditions.
As of February 2026, children in Ukraine had endured an average of about 4,000 hours of air raid alarms since the start of the full-scale war in February 2022. Save the Children provides mental health and psychosocial support through schools, community centers, Child Friendly Spaces and other programs designed to help children feel safe and recover.
Why do children in Ukraine still need urgent help?
Children continue to face violence, displacement, disrupted education and damage to homes and essential infrastructure. Around a quarter of Ukraine is contaminated by mines and explosive remnants of war, while attacks continue to affect places where children should be safe, including homes and schools.
The humanitarian need remains immense. An estimated 10.8 million people, including 2.2 million children, need humanitarian assistance in Ukraine in 2026.
