World Food Day: What It Is, When It Is and Why It Matters
World Food Day is observed every year on October 16 to raise awareness of hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity around the world. In 2026, more than 43 million children globally are suffering from severe malnutrition. For children, access to nutritious food is essential not only for survival, but for their ability to learn, grow and thrive.
When is World Food Day 2026?
World Food Day is observed globally every year on October 16.
What is World Food Day?
World Food Day marks the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. The day raises awareness about global hunger, food insecurity, and sustainable food systems.
Organizations like the World Food Program (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) join together to spotlight the urgent need to ensure that everyone—especially children—has enough nutritious food.
In 2020, the World Food Program received the Nobel Peace Prize for its vital role in combating hunger and promoting peace.
Why Is World Food Day Important for Children?
Hunger affects far more than whether a child has enough to eat. More than 43 million children globally are suffering from severe malnutrition. Children need consistent access to nutritious food to survive, learn and reach their full potential.
Around the world, conflict, extreme weather and economic instability can put children at greater risk of hunger and malnutrition. Acute malnutrition is both treatable and preventable, but preventing it requires sustained investment in nutrition, health systems, resilient food systems and early action before crises escalate.
How Save the Children Fights Hunger and Malnutrition
Save the Children takes a comprehensive approach to child hunger and malnutrition. Our work includes preventing malnutrition, treating children who are malnourished, strengthening health systems and delivering food to children in need. We also support policies that reduce child hunger, improve nutrition and strengthen food security for children and families in the United States and around the world.

"Around the world, one billion children lack access to basic needs to survive, including nutritious food, clean water and quality education. Behind that number are children who are hungry, displaced, frightened and missing out on the chance to learn and thrive. We have the tools to help them. The question is whether we will act. The cost of waiting is measured in children's lives."
- Janti Soeripto, Save the Children U.S. President and CEO
