Save the Children Statement on Operation Lone Star

WASHINGTON, D.C.(Aug.4, 2023)— Save the Children expresses deep concern and alarm over recent news reports that Texas state troopers have been separating families at the US-Mexico border under Operation Lone Star.

“As an organization that advocates for the rights and well-being of children, we know firsthand the devastating impact family separations can have on young lives. Children and parents experience immense trauma when torn apart, and the effects can be long-lasting, leading to emotional distress and lasting psychological harm,” said Christy Gleason, Vice President of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns at Save the Children.

Save the Children urges Governor Abbott to end Operation Lone Star and any immigration enforcement measures that aim to punish and harm families fleeing to save their lives. Deterrence tactics like these not only fail to address the root causes of migration but also endanger the well-being and safety of those seeking refuge. Furthermore, the federal government must utilize all available resources to promptly reunite separated families.

“We have seen this cruel practice before during the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy, and it is distressing to witness its resurgence,” continued Gleason. “Adding family separation to a series of harsh practices, such as using razor wire, pushing children and families back, and deploying large buoys to block the Rio Grande, only exacerbates the vulnerability of people seeking safety and protection.”

Save the Children – together with its US political advocacy arm, Save the Children Action Network – will continue to urge all relevant stakeholders, including the state and federal authorities, to prioritize the protection and well-being of asylum seekers, particularly children and pregnant women, and to take all necessary measures to ensure their safety and access to essential services. And, in partnership with a network of shelters and social service agencies across the length of the U.S.-southern border, Save the Children stands ready to serve migrant children and families, and support any increased humanitarian needs that may arise.
