SAVE THE CHILDREN: State and Foreign Operations Bill a Serious Failure of U.S. Leadership, Putting Millions of Lives at Risk

Washington, D.C. (July 14, 2023) – After the House Appropriations Committee approved the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill, Christy Gleason, Vice President of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns at Save the Children, issued the following statement:

“This bill is a serious failure of U.S. leadership at a time when millions of kids around the world are facing unprecedented challenges – from humanitarian crises to hunger to climate change to displacement. The list goes on. Our leaders could have used this bill as an opportunity to meet these challenges head on, saving countless lives and ensuring a safer, healthier, and more prosperous future for millions of children and families. Instead, they cut vital funding to Migration and Refugee Assistance and cut operating expenses by nearly a third. Not only will such cuts drastically impact the livelihoods of children and families, but they’ll also jeopardize USAID’s ability to fulfill commitments to working with local partners, something Save the Children is deeply concerned about.”
