Former President and CEO of Save the Children
Charles MacCormack
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Charles MacCormack , former president and CEO of Save the Children U.S. from 1993 - 2011.
An admired and beloved colleague, Charlie devoted 25 years of his career to Save the Children. He played a pivotal leadership role in establishing Save the Children International (SCI), helping to create a global, integrated movement for children after decades as an alliance of independent national organizations. Charlie also oversaw the growth of our work across rural America, including expanding before and after school programs and setting up schools and counseling centers in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. After his tenure at Save the Children US, he continued to serve the global organization as a board member at SCI.
Charlie was unwavering in his commitment to championing the rights and well-being of all children in the U.S. and around the world. He and his late wife established the Ainsley Ross-MacCormack Scholarship Fund, which has reached hundreds of girls in Nepal.
Passionate about connecting Save the Children team members with our work in action, no matter their role, Charlie established a fund with his dear friend, critically acclaimed writer, producer, director and philanthropist Sam Simon, which provides staff with professional development opportunities, including visits to our programs, to learn and deepen their experience with Save the Children.
Our logo is named “Charlie” in honor of Charlie MacCormack. This was not by accident. We are confident that Charlie’s legacy will live on and are deeply grateful for his decades of service to Save the Children. We send our sympathies to Charlie’s loved ones. His vision and dedication have not only been inspirational, but instrumental –dramatically increasing the reach, scale and impact of our programs and advocacy throughout the world.
