Governance, Finance and Accountability

Save the Children’s mission to ensure children are healthy, educated and safe, relies upon addressing the legal and policy barriers that threaten children’s well-being. Save the Children has decades of experience working on governance issues focused on three areas:

  • Good governance for children – ensuring laws, policies and resources work for children’s well-being
  • Monitoring child rights – ensuring accountability for children to exercise their citizenship to effect social and political change
  • Investment in children – advancing public spending that directly benefits children, such as on social protection, health, education, child protection and children in emergencies

Our work on investment in children focuses on ensuring that governments are providing funding for vital services to give children a chance at a bright future – such as health, education and nutrition.

But we also know that the way for countries to really scale up their investment in children is to increase the amount of funding that governments have to invest. That’s why we’re increasingly focused on how low-income countries can increase their tax revenue to generate more resources to finance their own development. This research and advocacy builds upon decades of experience in budget advocacy and ensuring quality basic services for children and their families at the sub-national and national levels. Our growing governance and development finance programs seek to foster environments where children and their families can thrive.
