What are the advantages of donating Bitcoin to Save the Children?
- Turn your capital gains to good: In the U.S., the IRS classifies Bitcoin donations as property, meaning your Bitcoin donation can help offset capital gains tax.*
Remain anonymous if you wish: We accept anonymous donations. As an anonymous donor, you can receive a tax receipt if you provide an email address.
Don't Trust, Verify: Bitcoin donations to Save the Children can be verified on-chain so you can feel confident that your contribution went to the right place.
We understand the value of Bitcoin as a store of value and as a peer-to-peer technology that can supercharge the way we reach those who need our help.

FAQs About Bitcoin Donations
Is donating Bitcoin tax deductible?
Yes, in most cases. Save the Children Federation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so Bitcoin donations are generally tax deductible in the US. The IRS treats cryptocurrency as property, so your deduction depends on how long you held it. Consult a tax advisor for your situation.
Do I pay capital gains tax when I donate Bitcoin?
Generally no. Donating Bitcoin directly, instead of selling it first, typically means you don't owe capital gains tax on the appreciation. If you held it more than one year, you may be able to deduct its full fair market value. This can make a gift go further than donating cash.
Will I get a tax receipt?
Yes. For crypto gifts over $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified appraisal and Form 8283 to claim the deduction. Our team can share the documentation you need.
Can I donate Bitcoin anonymously?
Yes. You can choose not to share personal details, but you'll need to provide an email to receive a tax receipt.
How does Save the Children use Bitcoin donations?
Through the Save the Children Bitcoin Fund, we hold Bitcoin donations in Bitcoin and deploy them directly in our humanitarian response, including cash assistance work with partners like Fedi and financial literacy programs for youth.
