Global: Save the Children a Core Partner on $311 Nutrition Award from USAID
We are pleased to announce that Save the Children is a core partner selected by USAID to improve nutrition for women and children in low- and middle-income countries around the globe. The five-year program—USAID Advancing Nutrition—will bring together international and local organizations from various sectors and disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate activities that combat malnutrition. JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) will lead this project.
“This new initiative has enormous potential to improve the health and nutritional status of vulnerable populations around the globe by working across sectors to address the root causes of malnutrition,” said Heather Danton, director of the new USAID Advancing Nutrition project. “[We are] excited about this opportunity to work with a wide range of partners to improve nutrition outcomes for people, families, and communities in support of the Agency’s efforts to save lives and promote strong, productive citizens and self-reliant societies.”
Poor nutrition results in millions of deaths among children each year and costs billions of dollars in lost productivity. USAID Advancing Nutrition will take a multi-sectoral approach to minimize the root causes of malnutrition by building local capacity, supporting behavior change, and strengthening the enabling environment to save lives, improve health, build resilience, and increase economic productivity.
With decades of maternal, newborn, child health, and nutrition experience, Save the Children recently supported the completion of USAID’s global multi-sectoral nutrition project, Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations Globally (SPRING) (2011-2018). In addition, we implement various programs around the world to help women and young children access quality nutrition services from frontline health workers and volunteers in the community. Our multi-sector, integrated programs encourage adequate and quality food intake, optimal infant and young child feeding and care practices, and protections against diseases by supporting breastfeeding, complementary feeding and hygiene, healthcare seeking and maternal nutrition behaviors during the first 1,000 days.
