GIRLS ON THE MOVE ARE THE PIPPIS OF TODAY

Pippi of Today is a new initiative from The Astrid Lindgren Company in partnership with Save the Children supporting girls. When Pippi Longstocking, the fictional character created by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, was introduced 75 years ago, the Second World War was ending, and millions of girls were on the move.

Today, Pippi is one of the most recognizable characters in the world – and she is the embodiment of strength, resilience and positivity. And today, as was the case 75 years ago, many girls are forced to leave their homes – and move not only to new cities but also to new countries. These girls gather all of their strength, courage and hope to tackle challenges and find their way to brighter futures. Join us in supporting the Pippis of today!

Who is Pippi?

Astrid Lindgren is one the most famous authors in the world. In 1945 her first book, Pippi Longstocking, was published. With her mismatched stockings, carrot-colored hair and freckly face, super-human strength and resilience, Pippi Longstocking has become a cultural icon.

Pippi is regularly recognized as one of the world’s favorite children’s characters; self-sufficient, quick-witted, generous and never letting anything – or anyone – shake her self-belief.

Her fans range from astronauts and politicians to pop culture icons and celebrities. Her rebellious nature also inspired the character of Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson's world-renowned Millennium trilogy.

No stranger to counterculture, Pippi can be seen around the world in tattoos, celebrity photographs, works of graffiti and on catwalks as a symbol of female strength, resilience, kindness, fairness and acceptance.

SUPPORT GIRLS ON THE MOVE

World's Strongest Pippi Girl

THE WORLD'S STRONGEST GIRLS

Today, we know very little about the stories of girls on the move. 2020 is the year when their stories get to be heard. With the support partners all over the world, the funds raised will support Save the Children’s mission to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.  In every girl there is a Pippi, and just like her, every girl deserves the chance to take control of her own story.
