Young Blandhina in Malawi loves learning, thanks to a Save the Children Child Sponsorship program. She wants to be a radio announcer one day.
Learning is something that really excites Blandhina, 10. But when she first started school a few years ago she wasn’t able to read or write. Now, those are her favorite hobbies and learning is something that holds a special place in her heart.
Each day Blandhina walks almost one mile to her school – sometimes with a group of friends and sometimes alone. Although the walk is long, Blandhina doesn’t let it keep her from an education. She enjoys her lessons and playing with her friends.
“I wouldn’t change anything, it has been a good year,” she says.
One of Blandhina’s favorite things about school is participating in the Save the Children Child Sponsorship program. For the last three years Blandhina has been corresponding with her sponsor, Patricia, through letters and drawings. She also participates in the "buddy system" through our Child Sponsorship program, which is an after school program that teaches children to read by learning from one another in a group setting.
“A lot of the things Save the Children has done have helped improve my school experience, like receiving letters, the programs and getting things like [an] exercise book,” Blandhina says.
Her hard work and dedication to her education is paying off in more ways than improved marks in school. Blandhina has dreams of becoming a radio announcer when she grows up. In Malawi most girls stop attending school by age 10, due to the need for their help at home or for safety reasons. Through Save the Children Child Sponsorship programs, Blandhina has realized that when she grows up she can do anything she puts her mind to.
