The change is evident with his learning level at school. Before the program, I didn’t want to keep Stayabou at school, but now we understand the importance and will keep both him and his sister in school to let them follow their dreams,” said Stayabou’s father.

Meet Stayabou

With the help of our sponsors, our child sponsorship programs ensure that parents in Niger know why sending their kids to school is essential for their futures.

Stayabou’s parents have to work hard every day, from sun up until sun down, in order to have enough food to feed their family of 12. Though Staybou’s father has a farm that the family uses for daily meals, the small plot’s harvest can’t provide enough food for their large family. Most of Stayabou’s siblings aren’t able to go to school. Instead they must work on neighboring farms for supplemental food in order for the family to survive. Stayabou’s mother and father decided that he and one of his sisters could attend school when possible, but the value of an education never overrode the need for food. Stayabou’s presence in school suffered.

Save the Children arrived in Maradi, Niger in 2016. Our first priority was to start educating Stayabou’s community about the importance of attending school regularly. And it’s made a difference!

The headmaster of Stayabou’s school has seen an improvement in many of the children’s attendance. “The sponsorship program contributes to improving the community mobilization around the children’s studies. Children now attend school regularly and are motivated to show up. And their teachers are more involved.”

With the help of our sponsors, we have big plans to improve the education in Stayabou’s school in Niger. We’ve only just begun.
