Sponsorship has helped Haneen and her peers learn how to cooperate with everyone without discrimination.

Meet Haneen

Through participation in one of Save the Children’s many youth clubs, Haneen is learning about her rights. "One of the most important rights that I am grateful for is the fact that I can express my opinion freely while demonstrating love and respect to those around me," says Haneen.

11-year-old Haneen lives with her mother, sister and brother, along the east bank of the Nile River in Egypt. Haneen’s father is a plumber in Qatar, sending money home to support the family. Haneen has dreams of becoming a pediatrician.

Before joining one of the sponsorship youth clubs held at her school, Haneen didn't have friends and she always preferred to be alone. She felt unimportant. She had low self-confidence and was bullied by peers, which affected her classroom performance and participation.

In 2016, Haneen joined a Save the Children-sponsored youth club focused on child protection education. The club aims to enhance the skills of children, to prevent and respond to violence, to promote tolerance and self-worth among children and to encourage children to take charge of their lives. Through her participation, Haneen was surprised to learn that there were alternative, peaceful methods to communicate frustration when being bullied.

Thanks to sponsorship support, Haneen and her peers have learned how to listen to others and support one another.

“The most interesting activity that I enjoyed during these sessions is the community mapping exercise. I got to draw my village and discuss with my peers what services to use, what strengths and challenges face our community and our role in improving our community,” explains Haneen.

Through sponsorship, Haneen is learning that she is important, she is valued and she has rights – three things every child deserves.
