A 10-year old sponsored girl smiles from her desk in a classroom. She is part of Save the Children's refugee sponsorship program in Egypt and is one of four child ambassadors within the program. She and her family are Syrian refugees who fled their country in 2012 in hopes of a better life. Thanks to Save the Children's refugee sponsorship program, both short-term and longer-term needs of vulnerable refugee children and their families are addressed, including protection, education, health and livelihoods support, counseling and psychological support. Aseel*, age 10, at school in Egypt.

Aseel's Journey

When the air strikes started in 2012, Aseel*, who was only 4 years old at the time, was forced to flee her home along with her parents and two younger siblings. The family fled from Syria to Lebanon and currently live in a small one-bedroom apartment in Egypt where her father works as a driver and her mother is a teacher.

After being out of school for nearly 4 years, Aseel struggled to read and write and was shy around her peers, preferring not to talk or participate in classroom activities. Once integrated into the local Syrian community school, she was able to learn and interact with children who are experiencing similar circumstances. Now, Aseel loves to read and go to school to learn about new subjects. She dreams of continuing to study history so that she can become an archeologist!

Be a Hero in the Life of a Refugee Child

Aseel is not alone; children make up more than half of the world’s 21.3 million refugees. Many have known nothing but war, deprivation and fear. Like Aseel, they miss time in school and often struggle to find the basic essentials – their lives and futures at risk.

You can help. By sponsoring a child in Egypt, you can be a hero in their lives and in the lives of other children in the community. With your steady support, they’ll finally have the chance to grow up healthy, learning and safe.

Because every child, everywhere, deserves a future.
