Statement from the Save the Children CEO on the Supreme Court's decision regarding Migrant Protection Protocols

Washington, D.C. (June 30, 2022) – In response to today’s Supreme Court decision upholding President Biden’s move to terminate the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), more commonly known as the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, Janti Soeripto, President and CEO of Save the Children, issued the following statement:

“We wholeheartedly applaud today’s decision by the Supreme Court, finally allowing the Biden administration to end the harmful Remain in Mexico policy, closing a shameful three-year chapter in American history. Save the Children has strongly advocated against MPP since it was enacted in 2019 and, together with partners, filed an amicus brief highlighting the human cost of this policy, which knowingly put asylum-seeking children and families in harm’s way. We are encouraged to see that our joint-efforts have contributed to today’s positive news, and look forward to continuing to work together to ensure MPP is never revived.

“While today’s Supreme Court decision is a critical step in the right direction, we will continue to strongly advocate for a more humane, dignified and equitable immigration system that promotes the rights and safety of children and families. We cannot forget the other detrimental immigration policies – such as a Title 42 – still in place in a country that should be a safe-haven for the persecuted. Only this week, over 50 migrants died due to America’s broken immigration system. Real, systemic change is needed to ensure asylum-seekers – including children and families – are given their legal right to seek safety within our borders.”

Save the Children – together with its political advocacy arm, Save the Children Action Network – will continue to mobilize on behalf of asylum-seeking children and families, and ensure they are treated legally and humanely, with dignity and respect.
