Passage of Global Humanitarian Sanctions Exemption by the UN Security Council—Save the Children Statement
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec. 9, 2022)—Save the Children commends the United States for its leadership in securing the successful passage of a resolution at the United Nations Security Council today that ensures that UN sanctions do not negatively impact the millions of children around the world who are in need of lifesaving assistance.
“Sanctions should never hinder children from accessing the support and services they need to grow up safe, healthy, and educated,”said Christy Gleason, Vice President of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns at Save the Children.
“We applaud the U.S. Government for its catalytic role at the UN Security Council and look forward to continuing to work with the U.S. Treasury Department to take action domestically to protect children’s access to humanitarian assistance.”
The landmark resolution passed by the UN Security Council today will have a transformational effect on the ability of humanitarian agencies like Save the Children to get lifesaving support to those who need it.
The number of people who require humanitarian relief has doubled in four years, and now 86.3 million people in need live in countries impacted by UN Security Council sanctions. This resolution is meaningful action in support of the survival of the millions of children trapped in humanitarian emergencies.
Save the Children is calling on world leaders to implement today’s resolution, in spirit and letter, and adopt it into their domestic laws.
Today’s news is proof that the Security Council can work together to solve some of the world’s most challenging issues, champion the needs of the vulnerable, and make the world a better place for children.
