Save the Children Supporting Children and Families Impacted by Historic Flooding in Arkansas, Missouri
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (May 5, 2017) — Heavy rains and deadly flooding in parts of Arkansas and Missouri this past week have killed at least 10 people and put children and families at risk.
Save the Children’s emergency response team is assessing families’ needs in the two states and working with partners to help flooded child-care centers recover near the Mississippi River. We have a multi-year presence in both states, helping improve community and child care preparedness. Based on assessment finding, Save the Children anticipates providing emotional and psychosocial support to children and families, as well as helping restore child care programs affected by the floods.
"Our thoughts and hearts go out to all who have had their lives upended by this historic flooding," said Jeanne-Aimee De Marrais, Save the Children’s senior director of U.S. Emergency Response. "We have worked in the region for more than 15 years, providing early education programs throughout parts of Arkansas, and for the last few years, we have been supporting Arkansas and Missouri emergency preparedness. We always stand ready to help children recover from disaster."
