Save the Children Preparing to Respond to Hurricane Maria to Help Affected Children and Families
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 19, 2017) — In a very active and destructive 2017 Hurricane Season, Save the Children is now preparing to respond to help children and families most affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Save the Children is in touch with federal authorities and established partners on the ground, as Hurricane Maria is currently projected to make a direct hit on Puerto Rico Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 20. Save the Children’s response and recovery efforts continue in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma across Florida.
"Save the Children stands ready to meet the specific needs of children and families in the wake of Hurricane Maria. We strongly urge parents and families to be safe and to follow evacuation orders issued by Governor Ricardo Rosselló and his team and take shelter if mandated," said Carolyn Miles, President & CEO, Save the Children. "The people of Puerto Rico are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Irma, and now they face even greater impact from Hurricane Maria. Save the Children is at the ready to help focus on the needs of children, who we know are among the most vulnerable in times of disaster."
Save the Children’s emergency team is carefully monitoring the hurricane’s potential impact on children and families in Puerto Rico. We are preparing a team to deploy to Puerto Rico immediately following the storm and will continue to collaborate with key partners during this preparatory phase.
