Newark Prep Rally Helps Kids Prepare for Disaster, Marks Hurricane Sandy 5-Year Anniversary
U.S. Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ) Takes Preparedness Pledge with Speedway Academies Students at Save the Children Prep Rally
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 27, 2017)— Just days before the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the most destructive hurricane to ever hit New Jersey, Save the Children staff members today hosted a Prep Rally at Newark’s Speedway Academies to help kids prepare for future emergencies.
U.S. Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ) – who represents New Jersey’s 10th District, including Newark – also participated in the Prep Rally, an interactive program that helps teach children critical disaster preparedness skills. Save the Children created the Prep Rally as a signature part of its Get Ready Get Safe initiative, which is designed to help U.S. communities prepare, protect and care for the most vulnerable among us in times of crisis – children.
Third and fourth graders at Speedway Academies took part in numerous engaging Prep Rally activities, including the Disaster Supplies Relay Race, the Preparedness Pledge and the Prep Step, a fun song and dance to help make preparedness accessible for families.
"Save the Children is on the ground helping children and families affected by the recent disasters, but we are also encouraging communities all across the country, like Newark, to be better prepared for the next emergency," said Sarah Thompson, Save the Children’s Director of U.S. Emergency Preparedness. "The goal of a Prep Rally is to take preparedness seriously, but make it fun and memorable so that kids feel safe and empowered to help make change at home."
Rep. Payne led students in the Preparedness Pledge and started the Disaster Supplies Relay Race.
"Rep. Payne is a tremendous champion for children, and played an integral role this past year in introducing critical legislation to better protect kids in emergencies," said Thompson. "We were honored to have him take an active part in the Prep Rally, helping raise awareness about the importance of preparing children and families for disaster."
"Today’s Prep Rally reminds us that preparing for disaster is something families and communities can do together," Rep. Payne, Jr., said. "As a father, I appreciate the work Save the Children does to help children and families plan for safety before disaster strikes. It was a privilege to join these young people as they had fun, worked together and made their disaster go-bags."
Prep Rally volunteers from health and hygiene company RB were also on hand at Speedway Academies, helping pack and hand out emergency "go-bags" for the students, which contain essential disaster supplies and comfort items for kids.
In the U.S., RB works with Save the Children to help families and schools better prepare for disasters through Get Ready Get Safe, and RB staff are also trained to lead Prep Rallies for schools and organizations.
