Save the Children Spokespeople Available: Hurricane Patricia

Fairfield, Conn. (October 23, 2015) — Hurricane Patricia, described as the strongest storm ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, is expected to hit Mexico’s coast somewhere between Manzanillo and San Blas, Nayarit, this afternoon (CDT).

The Category 5 storm has drastically increased its strength in less than 24 hours, with sustained winds of over 200 mph.

More than half a meter of rainfall is expected in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero over the next 24 hours, with coastal flooding, interruptions to electricity and telecommunications and damage to infrastructure expected.

School classes and flights have been canceled in warning zones in the three states.
