Mattel and Save the Children

Mattel supports our early childhood programs in China and Indonesia, as well as our Early Steps to School Success early learning program in the United States. They also support education for children in Mexico City. Mattel has been a steadfast partner during times of disaster. In 2011, Mattel became Save the Children's first Corporate Partner for Children in Emergencies through a pledge to support the agency's disaster risk reduction activities, including pre-positioning of relief supplies and building response capacity through training and innovative uses of technology,.These funds, support our emergency response efforts in the U.S. and around the world.

With Mattel’s support, Save the Children’s Early Steps to School Success early learning coordinators bring books and guidance to moms in rural America, encouraging parents to read to their young children. In the United States, nearly 7,200 children benefited from Early Steps to School Success. –In addition, more than 4,000 adult caregivers benefited from knowledge and skills training that helps them support their children’s education.

Thanks to Mattel’s donation of 3,500 high-quality toys distributed to over 70 early childhood development centers across China, more than 15,000 children are currently learning and growing in child-friendly spaces.

Nie Aiqin, 30, is grateful that her 3-year-old daughter, Xia Zhijun, and her 2-year-old son, Xia Zhihua, can play in the Yamenkou Community Early Childhood Care and Development Center, a child-friendly parenting/learning center established by Save the Children and supported by Mattel.

As Nie Aiqin explains: “The financial condition of our family is limited, so we did not buy many toys for the kids and we do not really know what kind of toys to buy for them. Then I found this center and think it is very good. We come here almost every day. Here, the toys are of diverse types and high quality, so the kids really like them and they always have a good time. Sometimes I play house with them, and when I see them happy and merry I also get into a great mood. It is the toys here that have helped my kids to grow up, so we really appreciate those kind-hearted people’s helping and caring.”
