Hannah Has Hopes After Typhoon Haiyan

Rafael, 10 - Case Study, Typhoon Haiyan, Philippines
When their house was destroyed, Hannah’s family lost everything in it. Now without food, shelter, and a change of clothes, Hannah is desperate for help.

Hannah, only nine years old, shared how her family tried to escape the wrath of Typhoon Haiyan a day before it hit the province where she lives.

Recognizing the danger the typhoon might bring, her father decided to seek shelter and bring the entire family to one of the government buildings. Her relatives joined them soon after.
The next morning, the typhoon hit and Hannah was awakened by the violent winds shaking the windows.

“I was scared because the wind was very strong. The walls and windows were shaking. Within moments, we realized water started flooding in.”
While telling her story, Hannah stood up to show the water was waist-deep. Frightened by what she saw, Hannah clung to her mother tightly. “I became even more frightened because I lost my slippers while we braved the floods. When I saw the roof being ripped off by the winds, I thought it would never end. I prayed that it would stop.”

Hannah stared blankly at the wall. “Our house has no roof now.”

When their house was destroyed, Hannah’s family lost everything in it. Now without food, shelter, and a change of clothes, Hannah is desperate for help.
With your help, Save the Children can distribute emergency kits for children and families like Hannah’s who have survived the typhoon. We are in the field working to provide household and hygiene supplies, clean drinking water, cleaning items, temporary school tents and education materials to the thousands of children like Hannah who have lost everything to Typhoon Haiyan.

Hannah explained that her family has to stay in the building for the next month. Though the conditions in the Philippines have left thousands of people devastated, for now Hannah is just happy that her family survived that fateful morning.

Hopefully, Hannah will feel safe and secure again soon. Kids like Hannah need caring people like you to support Save the Children's response efforts.
