Hunger Crisis: An Insidious Villain
Millions of people, most of them innocent children, are at risk in the Horn of Africa due to the worst hunger crisis in 60 years. Millions of children in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya are hungry, thirsty and desperate. Drought and famine have put them in danger of becoming critically malnourished and, without help, many in the worst hit areas could die. Thankfully, thousands of lives have been saved. Children can survive this crisis …and thrive. Donations from heroes like you have helped Save the Children provide food, treatment for malnutrition, support for nursing mothers and their babies, and much more. In times of crisis, we are stronger together. You can become a force for good.Save the Children's Results: One Year On
In 2011, a deadly food crisis across east Africa claimed tens of thousands of lives and left millions destitute and hungry. A year on, we've reached over 3.4 million people. Thanks to you, we're still on the ground, saving lives and giving children a chance at a better future. Our Response to Date: In Ethiopia
, we've reached over 2 million people - distributing hundreds of tons of food and water, and at the same time delivering high quality education to over 60,000 children. We're working closely with the government to help communities prepare for future droughts - building community resilience, creating drought reserve grazing areas for livestock and working with women to create cereal banking co-operatives.In Kenya
, we've reached over 850,000 people, including 250,000 with vital, lifesaving health work. We've also worked hard to strengthen the government's health system, by training local community health workers. We're working with children in the Dadaab refugee camp who have been deeply affected by the ongoing civil war in Somalia, to ensure our legacy in Kenya and across the region is more than simply an emergency response. In Somalia
, we have reached over 455,000 people, fed over 150,000 young children and mothers, and have provided clean water and food to thousands more. We also continue to support households to prepare for future shocks by protecting their assets and providing access to adequate support during times of heightened vulnerability. This is done in conjunction with strengthening their foundations during better times.Read the Full One Year Report
