Shawn Ahmed: Ending Poverty One Project at a Time

Champion for Children: Shawn Ahmed

"I can’t single-handedly end global poverty," says Shawn Ahmed, shown here at the 2011 World Economic Forum, "but I can take actions and inspire others."

Thanks in part to motivated, socially-networked champions for children, like vlogger (video blogger) Shawn Ahmed, Save the Children is now a leader in leveraging the power of social media for social good.

Shawn Ahmed of Toronto was so motivated by the message of Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, author of The End of Poverty, that he left his graduate studies at Notre Dame behind, cashed out his savings and took off, with just a laptop and a camcorder, to help poor people in Bangladesh.

That’s where Shawn saw, firsthand, Save the Children’s life-changing work for children and families in need. "I was very fortunate to cross paths with Save the Children," Shawn says, "even though it was under very unfortunate circumstances. Cyclone Sidr had just hit and millions of people were displaced and thousands were dead. This is where I first got to see Save the Children in action."

Inspired, Shawn started creating upbeat, informal YouTube videos and blogging about our work, raising awareness and urging his growing base of on-line followers to support Save the Children. He called it The Uncultured Project.

Today, The Uncultured Project is one of the world’s most popular social media-powered initiatives challenging global poverty, and Shawn, now 30, has been hailed as a leading champion for social good. He’s also been widely recognized for his work, including by the World Economic Forum (Davos Debates winner, 2011) and the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (Webby Awards winner, 2009).

Shawn continues to work independently with Save the Children, including participating in our Advocacy Day 2011 and YouTube’s Project for Awesome and supporting our newborn and child survival campaign See Where the Good Goes.

Recently, Save the Children endorsed Shawn’s World Economic Forum nomination as a Young Global Leader. Committed to leveraging the power of social media for social good, Save the Children empowers young leaders like Shawn Ahmed to champion our shared cause: the wellbeing of the world’s children.
