Meet Rima

17-year-old Rima and her family

Rima has seven brothers and sisters. She is a Secondary School Certificate examinee. Rima began her involvement with Save the Children when she was 6 years old.

Rima is 17 years old and lives in the village of Choirkuri in Bangladesh. Her father, Ataur, owns a small business and mother Shefaly takes care of household chores and looks after the children. Rima has seven brothers and sisters. She is a Secondary School Certificate examinee. Rima began her involvement with Save the Children when she was 6 years old.

One of Rima’s favourite experiences with Save the Children was when she facilitiated the “Esho Pori” (“Let’s Read”) group of the Child-to-Child program. There she was able to use her leadership skills to help other children in her village learn to read and to express themselves. Rima was also fortunate to have received training in journalism, which further built on her skills through “Esho Pori.”

As community members have shown their ability to take over the operation of Save the Children’s programs themselves, Save the Children has removed direct support from her village. Now Rima is still a member of the Adolescent and Reproductive Sexual Health (KAISHAR) group, attending weekly about adolescence, nutrition, physical and mental changes, pregnancy and delivery complexities, the negative consequences of the child marriage, family planning, etc. it is her village that is supporting the infrastructure.

One of Rima’s favourite experiences with Save the Children was when she facilitiated the “Esho Pori” (“Let’s Read”) group of the Child-to-Child program.

Rima is also the Publicity Secretary of the Lokokendra program, a community center started by Save the Children and now run by the community. She has availed herself of the opportunity of reading magazines, borrowing books from the mobile library, celebrating national days and skill development, like sewing as a trade.

Rima says “Save the Children has done a lot to change my life positively. Now I know how to write a report, how to talk to the people nicely.”

Rima acknowledges that she has learned a lot about communication skills, as well as national and international news. School support made available by Save the Children has influenced her to go ahead with studies. She is grateful to Save the Children and wants this organization to do for the other children country-wide what it has done for Nasirnagar.
