The Emergency

Still struggling after catastrophic flooding in 2010, the people of Pakistan have been hard hit by end another unrelenting monsoon flood. And while millions are still struggling to get their lives back to normal after a year of recovery, others have recently had their lives turned upside down as torrential rains have devastated nearly 5 million men, women and children.

The flooding has destroyed more than one million homes – leaving many families with no place to go but disaster survivor camps. Save the Children is preparing to launch a full scale response including food, shelter, health, child protection and more.

What Save the Children Did to Help Survivors of the 2010 Flood

Save the Children‘s relief workers began their efforts to help children and famlies on the first day of the floods. To date, we have reached over 4 million people, including nearly 2 million children, with over $90 million worth of humanitarian aid – more than double the initial target of reaching 2 million people. We have been on the ground conducting programs to provide shelter, medical aid, education, nutrition and other humanitarian relief. And we haven't stopped since. 

Children and families have received emergency medical care, water purification supplies, house-hold items, shelter and much more. Girls and boys have been kept safe and received the support they need to help them recover from the trauma of the flood.

Parents and families living in the flood zone are helping to revive their own communities with support from Save the Children's livelihood programs.  What's more, children are on their way back to school - we are working with local authorities to rebuild and revitalize the schools damaged by the floods. What Lies Ahead for Children in the Flood Zone

Save the Children developed a 2-year strategy in February 2011 to continue to help communities recover and rebuild their lives for the long term. We will build upon our successful relief work by implementing wide ranging and child centered early recovery programs in eight of the worst flood affected districts in Pakistan.

What Else Has Save the Children Done in Pakistan

Save the Children has been working in Pakistan for the last 25 years and has demonstrated experience of assisting children and families in the aftermath of emergencies in Pakistan, such as the conflict that forced more than 2 million people from their homes in the northwest in 2009 and the earthquake in 2005.
