What Is International Women’s Day?
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. International Women's Day was started in by suffragettes in 1911.
In 2023, Save the Children commissioned a new portrait to honor our founder, Eglantyne Jebb, on International Women’s Day.

Why do we celebrate International Women's Day?
For more than 100 years, Save the Children has been advocating for children, girls and mothers. We believe that all children deserve to grow up and achieve their dreams – regardless of their gender.
Even today, in many communities around the world, sons are considered superior, while daughters are viewed as a burden. Families marry off their daughters early – as young as 9 years old – and then their education ends and the cycle of poverty continues. And more than 16 million adolescent girls give birth each year – shockingly 95% of them are in the developing world.
