Haiti Earthquake

Save the Children’s humanitarian response to Haiti’s epic earthquake on January 12, 2010 represents one of the most challenging and complex emergency efforts we have ever undertaken. Over the past year, we have coordinated with Haitian authorities, the international community, local and international organizations and communities to reach some 682,000 children and adults with lifesaving and life-sustaining support.  Our work, begun in the very first hours after the catastrophe and based on our three-decade presence in Haiti, has taken place in the devastated capital of Port-au-Prince and in the shattered communities of Jacmel and Leogane and their environs. Read the one year report PDF

  • Save the Children has organized Livelihood activities including cash-for-work, market restoration and cash-transfers for vulnerable households that have benefited 99,240 people.
  • Our education team is constructing temporary classrooms, distributing school kits and restoring educational activities.  Our efforts have benefited 61,265 children and their families.
  • Health programs, including mobile and stationary clinics, consultations and trainings for new health care providers, have reached 123,391 children and adults.
  • Shelter teams have distributed tents, plastic sheeting, shelter kits and other non-food items to help restore temporary shelter to 31,320 children and members of their families.
  • Access to clean water, latrines, hand-washing facilities and hygiene promotion are among the activities the Water and Sanitation team is providing to more than 281,632 people.

Save the Children’s commitment to Child Protection has been seen in our Child-Friendly Spaces that provide children with structured play and emotional support, a family tracing and reunification program and training programs on child protection issues that have benefited 12,983 children and members of their families to date. However children still remain at risk, and the organization foresees a long-term process of intense reconstruction, rehabilitation and investment ahead. Save the Children has worked in Haiti since 1978.
