In Remote Indian Villages, Save the Children on the Scene after Monsoon Floods Leave Families Homeless

Overshadowed by Pakistan's epic flooding, monsoon rains in India also caused destructive floods and landslides. As in Pakistan, Save the Children has worked nonstop to respond to children and their families in places where few other aid agencies go.

Thanks to Save the Children donors, the agency has provided over 1,500 rural families with hygiene supplies to protect their health. Another 300 rural families — those most in need in the hardest-to-reach villages in Leh — will receive special support including temporary and then more permanent shelters to provide protection against the coming winter, stoves to heat with and warm winter clothing.

Through donor support, a partner agency will help 100 families in Kargil meet their housing needs after floods there.

• Save the Children and its partner have opened three Child Friendly Spaces so children can play and take part in structured activities.

• Children's education was affected, too. Over a dozen local schools were damaged or destroyed.  Restoring children's access to education is critical to their sense of well-being and recovery. Save the Children is working with teachers to set up tents and stock them with educational materials for temporary classrooms. Over 350 girls and boys received new school supplies.
