Hurricane Katrina

It's been five years since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast. What followed was the worst emergency response effort in U.S. history. Katrina revealed profound gaps in the disaster preparedness plans in the Gulf Coast region and nationwide, particularly with regards to children. Hurricane Katrina showed the harm children and families face when kids are not accounted for in disaster planning. Tsunami of 2004

Save the Children’s five-year humanitarian response represents one of the largest in the agency’s history. Our staff members were on the ground in many coastal areas when the disaster struck, and their work has benefited an estimated 1 million people in over 1,000 towns and villages. Crisis in Kyrgyzstan

Save the Children’s program of emergency assistance in Osh and Jalalabad following the June civil disturbances has reached more than 250,000 people with food, non-food aid items, protection, rubble removal and livelihoods assistance. Procurement of replacements for destroyed assets is underway, to put small-scale entrepreneurs back in business in Osh.
