FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 13, 2017)— Gabriela Hearst pledged to donate $600,000 for Save the Children’s famine relief efforts in Turkana, Kenya. To help raise much-needed awareness of the famine and in partnership with NET-A-PORTER and Bergdorf Goodman, the highly coveted Gabriela Hearst handbag collection was available for immediate purchase for the first time from October 1 to 8, 2017.
The eight-day sale period exceeded Gabriela’s expectations and within hours, styles were sold out immediately with the fastest sell-through on a Gabriela Hearst bag within such a short period of time.
Gabriela Hearst’s donation will provide cash grants of around $55 per month to more than 1,000 families in the Turkana region through the next harvest. These grants will give families the ability to purchase life-sustaining food, livestock and clean water to help them survive the drought.
"I am just in awe – shocked and elated that we completed the mission so successfully!" says Hearst. "Having seen the devastation firsthand, I knew I needed to bring attention to this humanitarian crisis that has more than 20 million people at risk of famine. From my experience as a farmer I know the havoc a drought can cause, but this was on a scale I had never witnessed before."
"The Save the Children teams on the ground are heroes and I wanted to get involved in whatever way I could so I pledged $600,000 to support the more than 1,000 families they could not cover but that needed urgent protection from the drought. With just one week to raise the funds, I am proud to say that we did it in just two days!" Hearst continues. "The response has been overwhelming. The work of my team, the media, and most importantly, the excited sales forces of both our retail partners turned our ambition into a reality. I am thrilled to have contributed our part but there is much more to be done; this is just the beginning."
"Gabriela Hearst has done the remarkable through the success of her handbag campaign. She has given mothers in Turkana, Kenya a voice. She is letting them be heard beyond their remote villages where the land is parched from lack of rain, livestock have died and every day is a struggle to find food and water to keep their children alive and healthy. Save the Children is incredibly grateful to Gabriela for her passionate support of our famine-relief efforts. Many mothers in Turkana, Kenya will be able to purchase life-sustaining food, livestock and clean water to help their children and families survive the drought." — Carolyn Miles, President & CEO of Save the Children
