WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 4, 2015) – Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles and Save the Children Action Network President Mark Shriver issued the following statement today on Dr. Ariel Pablos-Mendez being named the new Child and Maternal Health (MCH) Coordinator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Last year, Save the Children partnered with other organizations working to end preventable maternal and child deaths to send a letter to then-USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah calling for the appointment of an empowered Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Coordinator.

"The selection of Ariel Pablos-Mendez as the new Child and Maternal Survival Coordinator for USAID demonstrates a significant step forward in the United States' continued efforts to end preventable maternal and child deaths. We have valued our partnership with USAID, and our joint efforts to elevate the issue of child and maternal health within the global development agenda have led to considerable progress being achieved, with a reduction of preventable child deaths by nearly half over the past 20 years. We believe the MCH Coordinator can play a vital role furthering this work by serving as a champion and advocate to work with the public, Congress and within the Administration to accelerate U.S. efforts to end preventable maternal and child deaths, and we look forward to working closely with Dr. Pablos-Mendez in this new capacity."
