WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 25, 2014) — Save the Children Action Network welcomes today's announcement to support the creation of a Global Financing Facility (GFF) by the World Bank Group and the Governments of Canada, Norway and the United States.
"With less than 500 days left until the Millennium Development Goals 2015 deadline, one of the biggest obstacles we're facing is additional resources," said Mark Shriver, president of Save the Children Action Network. "The creation of the GFF, complemented by increased bilateral assistance from the U.S. and other nations, is a significant step forward in narrowing the resource gap towards ending preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths within a generation."
The GFF builds on the momentum started at the first-ever US-Africa Leaders' Summit in August and the introduction of the "Accelerating Action in Maternal and Child Health Act" by U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) just last week.
"The support we're seeing from global leaders and at both the administration and congressional levels for the most vulnerable mothers and children around the world is remarkable," continued Shriver. "However, we need to continue the pressure to ensure that funding requested by the President and approved by Congress match these actions."
The support to create the GFF was announced by global leaders at the high-level event for Every Woman Every Child during the 69th UN General Assembly.
