WESTPORT, Conn. (May 7, 2014) — Save the Children is appalled by the abduction of the schoolgirls in Nigeria. As a children’s rights organization we believe every boy and girl has the right to be educated and to be protected against all forms of violence.

This is yet another indication of how violence against children is being used in conflict across the world. Save the Children urges that those responsible for the abduction of the schoolgirls ensure their safe and immediate return to their families and communities.

This abduction case is a timely reminder of the importance of standing against all forms of violence against children and attacks on schools. Save the Children calls on governments to adopt the draft Lucens guidelines to help protect students, teachers, and schools during conflict.

Save the Children gives children in the United States and around the world a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protect from harm. We invest in childhood-- every day, in times of crisis and for our future. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
