Surveillance

Overview

  • Public health surveillance systems (morbidity and mortality) in emergency settings, both community and facility-based

  • Data analysis and interpretation, including calculation and interpretation of key morbidity and mortality indicators

Facilitation Notes

This session, part three of the three-part Assessments Module, illustrates the importance of creating a proper surveillance system in the aftermath of an emergency situation. When presenting this session, it is important to clarify the role that a SC staff member would play in surveillance.

Begin session with Surveillance in Humanitarian Emergencies slides, including the Case Study: Surveillance in Darfur to provide a detailed surveillance system example. Additional facilitation notes are included within the slides.
