Facilitation Notes The Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) session is part 2 of the 2-part Infant and Child Nutrition Module, composed of a slide presentation followed by three case studies. Before conducting this presentation, it is important to review the facilitation notes on each slide — many points not shown in the slides are addressed there. See the Infant and Young Child Feeding Summary Sheet for more information. |
Timing 2 hours and 30 minutes Allow 1 hour for presentation, 15 minutes for questions/answers, 45 minutes to complete case studies and 30 minutes for case study review. |
Exercises and Group Work IYCF Case Studies After completing the presentation, the three case studies listed below will be useful for participants to work through common IYCF issues in emergency situations. After creating small groups and passing out the handouts, give participants 45 minutes to determine recommended actions. Once groups have had the opportunity to present some of their suggestions, review the last three slides of the presentation giving recommended actions. Review any actions that may have been left out and address any questions. Case Study 1: Establishing conditions to support breastfeeding Case Study 2: Establishing conditions to minimize risk of artificial feeding Case Study 3: Unsolicited donations of formula and bottles |
