Measles and Other Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

Facilitation Notes As part of the Child Health Module, this session helps to define the broader epidemiological picture of under-5 health — why early measles detection and response is so important in emergency situations. Participants' attention should also be focused on the specific components of an emergency vaccination campaign, contrasted with those in the development context. Additional facilitation notes are included within the slides. Begin session with the Measles and Other Vaccine Preventable Diseases PowerPoint followed by the Measles Case Study: Afghanistan for participants to apply this knowledge and practice relevant calculations. See the Measles Summary Sheet for more information. |

Timing 2 hours and 30 minutes Allow 1 hour for presentation, 1 hour for case study, and 30 minutes for case study review |

Exercises and Group Work Measles Case Study: Afghanistan With this case study, participants respond to a possible measles outbreak and actively design a measles vaccination campaign that requires calculations of susceptible children and possible under-5 deaths, and use of a sample supply table. Begin exercise by distributing case study, introducing the activity objectives, and showing the case study map of Afghanistan. Part 1 Review case study background and discuss question 1 in plenary, using the corresponding case study slide to guide key points. Part 2 Divide participants into small groups, allotting the remainder of the hour to complete questions 2 through 10. If possible, groups should complete calculations on flipcharts for easy display. When all groups have finished, discuss the answers to each question before showing the corresponding slide. Compare the answers and fill in any gaps. |
