Abiyot's Story

http://www.savethechildren.org/emergencies/child_hunger_crisis/images/field5.jpg Food is scarce for Abiyot and her family. And she knows that the situation — which has already left her baby son, Million, weak and sick — will worsen before it gets better.

Abiyot, spoke with Save the Children staff at a health center in West Badowacho, Ethiopia, where the agency is providing community therapeutic care programs to children in need. Abiyot came from Garbo, an area 2.5 miles away from the health center. She has a family of eight, with six children under the age of 5.

"We do not have enough harvest of maize and sweet potato at the moment, and as we do not have enough food to feed my family." Abiyot and her family are now relying on general food distributions from the government. Last year their harvest consisted of were maize, sweet potatoes and kotcho, a pancake made from the stem and roots of the enset plant.

Abiyot brought her son to the health center, knowing that he would receive the help he needed. "I am happy that my child is receiving a good care," says Abiyot. "I am told that I will be staying with my child for a few days at the stabilization center run by Save the Children until he gets better."

Her son’s health is improving, but Abiyot is still concerned. Her greatest worry is that she will not be able to feed her family until September.
