World Pneumonia Day
This fall, Save the Children is leading the fight against child pneumonia with a coalition of major health and humanitarian organizations, corporations, and faith-based groups that are calling for the first-ever World Pneumonia Day on Nov. 2, 2009. Pneumonia is the leading killer of children under five, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all child deaths worldwide. In some of the world's poorest countries, parents and caregivers don’t have the tools they need — such as vaccines and antibiotics — to protect their children against illness. As a result, a disease as common as pneumonia can prove deadly for a child, as it did for nearly 2 million children last year. Read Dr. David Marsh's expert advice about Pneumonia. Providing parents and caregivers with the tools they need to protect their children is what World Pneumonia Day is all about. With improved vaccines and treatments, we can fight pneumonia and save the lives of children around the world.
