Ensuring the Economic Security of Children in Need
Save the Children is part of a growing movement to help families in developing countries reach economic security in order to provide a brighter future for their children. Save the Children’s Economic Opportunities (EO) office was created in 1994 with a pilot program in
Principles
Save the Children’s EO programs focus on gender equality and empowerment, scalability and sustainability. They serve ultimately to improve the lives of children and are designed to have an impact that is both measurable and lasting. For example:
-
Programs empower women by increasing their ability to raise income and grow assets, which in turn, improves their clout and position in their households and communities.
-
By targeting women, we are ensuring the impact on their children. Numerous studies have shown that women spend their additional income on their children and households — such as tuition or uniform costs for school, vaccinations or other forms of healthcare, and improving the structure and comfort of their homes.
-
Programs focus on supporting strong local providers of financial services, ensuring the long-term sustainability of community and individual economic gains.
-
Save the Children’s EO programming has proven to be a dynamic and financial sustainable way to reach families living in poverty with the use of limited funds.
