Revel Consulting Donates to Save the Children’s Clean Water Project in Sudan
Leading Business and IT Consulting Firm's Holiday Giving Campaign to Bring Safe Drinking Water to Thousands of Families in Sudan
WESTPORT, Conn. (Dec. 18, 2008) — Save the Children announced today a charitable donation by Revel Consulting to its LifeStraw® Clean Water Project in Sudan. Revel, a leading, national business and IT consulting firm based in Kirkland, Washington, is focusing its holiday giving campaign on the project aimed at bringing clean drinking water to thousands of children and families in the war-torn African country.
"In these tough economic times, we know that nonprofit organizations are facing challenges when it comes to raising important funds needed to continue their mission," said Vikas Kamran, CEO of Revel. "We believe that these organizations must have the continued support of the business community, so we decided to step up and help."
Revel's financial contribution will help Save the Children provide LifeStraw® Family point-of-use water filters to families living in the Upper Nile State of Southern Sudan, where Save the Children has existing health programs and staff on the ground. The project will target approximately 3,200 households in Sudan, which includes more than 19,000 people of which more than 4,000 are children under the age of five.
"The impact of this donation will be far-reaching," said Charles MacCormack, Save the Children's President and CEO. "Our programs serve families in some of the poorest, most remote communities in Sudan, where often the only water supply for miles may be contaminated. Waterborne diseases keep children from attending school and can be life-threatening to infants and toddlers."
According to its Swiss manufacturer Vestergaard Frandsen, the LifeStraw product filters a minimum of 18,000 liters (approximately 4,755 gallons), enough to provide safe drinking water to a family for up to three years, while removing a minimum of 99 percent of all bacteria, viruses and parasites. The product purifies water to US EPA standards and is very user-friendly, operating without the need for batteries, electricity or spare parts.
"We are honored to partner with Revel and Save the Children on such an important project," said Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, CEO of the Swiss company. "Their important actions today will reduce suffering and save the lives of many people living in very challenging circumstances. As the world increasingly views access to clean and safe drinking water as a basic human right, we hope many other public and private sector partners will follow their inspirational lead and help address the problem of access to safe and clean drinking water."
The LifeStraw® Clean Water Project will commence in 2009 as a pilot project for the first year and a half. After this initial test period, Save the Children will conduct surveys and field tests on the families' use of the filters and the health impacts of the LifeStraw® products in order to evaluate further program expansion.
