Julianne Moore Announces Save the Children Valentine's Day Campaign

Four-time Academy Award-nominated actress, children's book author, mother of two appeals to Americans to give to children in need this Valentine's Day

Moore's Save the Children Valentine's Go Live February 1st at www.savethechildren.org

New York, NY (January 30, 2008)—Actress, author and mother Julianne Moore today announced a special initiative with Save the Children that will allow people across the nation to print and email custom cards to friends and loved ones this Valentine's Day in return for a donation to the charity. The initiative comes on the heels of Moore's visit to see Save the Children's work in one of the poorest, most remote communities in the mountains of Appalachia, where Save the Children has worked for more than 75 years.

"In a land of such wealth and prosperity, it is shocking to see so many children and their families struggling to get by. In fact, in rural America, one in five children lives in poverty," said Moore.

A mother of two, Julianne's heart went out to children less fortunate than her own. "After seeing that kind of devastation firsthand, I couldn't stand by and do nothing--so I talked to my kids about it. Since Valentine's Day has always been a time to show you care, we approached Save the Children with this special Valentine's Day campaign."

By logging on to www.savethechildren.org and making a donation to Save the Children between Friday, Feb. 1st and Thursday, Feb. 14th, you can print or email custom Valentine's cards, featuring children's artwork, to give to classmates, friends and family. If you choose, you can honor someone special with a gift donation and Save the Children will mail a personal card for you. Your donation will help Save the Children reach more children in the nation's poorest, rural communities.

"I spent some time with Julianne when she visited our programs in Appalachia, and she was fantastic with the children and with the parents—she visited with a mother in her home and played with her young daughter, who has Spina Bifida; she read books to the children at the elementary school; and she talked with the parents about their interests and challenges" said Mark Shriver, Vice President and Managing Director of Save the Children's U.S. Programs. We are thrilled for Julianne Moore to launch a Valentine's campaign founded on love—one that will help these kids through early childhood education, literacy, physical activity and nutrition programs."

In October 2007 Moore made her literary debut with a children's book titled, Freckleface Strawberry.

"As an author, I was particularly moved to see firsthand how these programs are helping to foster children's love of reading by teaching new moms about early learning activities for their young children and helping struggling students overcome obstacles to reading," said Moore.

About Save the Children's U.S. Programs

Through after-school and summer programs, as well as in-school literacy support, Save the Children's U.S. programs benefit more than 35,000 children a year, providing them with the tools and support they need to break the cycle of poverty. Today, when 2.6 million children in rural America are still living in poverty and one-third of U.S. children and adolescents are either obese or at risk of becoming obese, Save the Children continues its work in rural communities providing literacy, physical activity, nutrition and early childhood support to children in need. Save the Children is working in some of the nation's poorest communities in Appalachia, the Southeast, the Mississippi River Delta, the Gulf Coast, the Southwest and California's Central Valley.
