Save the Children Enters the Giving Challenge
A Competition Utilizing Social Networking to Benefit Charities
Project Engages Facebook, MySpace and Network for Good Users
January 10, 2008 (Westport, Conn) — Save the Children has joined the Giving Challenge, two on-line charity competitions sharing the same simple objective: to get the greatest number of people to donate through social-networking by January 31. The Case Foundation is awarding a total of $750,000 in charitable grants through the America's Giving Challenge presented by Parade and the Causes Giving Challenge on Facebook. Save the Children could win up to $50,000 in each challenge.
"The Giving Challenge offers advocates of all ages the chance to help children through on-line action," said Charles MacCormack, president and CEO of Save the Children. "You don't have to live in Darfur or Afghanistan to make a real difference for children. You can log on and take the Giving Challenge from your dorm, your home or even your local Starbucks." MacCormack added, "You can donate for as little as $10, the same cost of 10 iTunes songs."
The Giving Challenge offers on-line advocates two challenges to win up to $50,000 for their favorite charities.
- America's Giving Challenge presented by Parade magazine:
Champion a Cause — The eight fundraising champions who get the most unique donations (with a $10 minimum per donation each) over the Challenge period will get $50,000 for their favorite cause.
Give to a Cause — The 100 non-profit organizations with the greatest number of unique donors (greatest number of different people donating) daily will each get $1,000. Donations from the same individual will only be counted once.
- Causes Giving Challenge on Facebook:
The charity with the most unique donors (greatest number of different people donating) over the Challenge period will win $50,000. Second and third place winners will each receive $25,000. While the next 10 causes will each be awarded $10,000.
The charity with the greatest number of unique donors daily will get $1,000.
The goal of the Giving Challenge is not only to raise money for charities but also to spread awareness of the work that participating charities do. Through everyday on-line communications networks such as e-mail, blogs, web pages and social networks, Giving Challenge participants are asked to use these tools to advocate for their cause and mobilize friends and family to get involved in a number of ways, such as by adding the cause to their on-line profile, adding a charity badge or donating to the cause.
"The Giving Challenge engages nonprofits to participate in social networking while engaging social networkers to fundraise or donate for as little as $10, where the cumulative effect can add up to make a big difference," said Kate Talbot, Project Leader — Giving Challenges of The Case Foundation.
