Save the Children Assists Children and Families Displaced by New Jersey Floods
Washington, DC (April 27, 2007) – As central New Jersey struggles to recover from flooding in the wake of a recent nor'easter, Save the Children has dispatched an emergency response team to provide supplies and assistance to children and families displaced from their homes.
At the invitation of the American Red Cross and with the support of volunteers from the Church of the Brethren, Save the Children has set up safe play places in several local emergency shelters and offered organized activities for children residing in these shelters. The team is also providing shelters with critical family items, including strollers, diapers, baby wipes and baby shampoo.
In addition, Save the Children will be establishing safe spaces for children at three Red Cross Service Centers. Many families seeking to register for disaster assistance are faced with long waits. These safe spaces will provide children with toys, games and activities while their parents wait for assistance.
"As communities in central New Jersey begin to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of this flood, Save the Children is working to ensure that the unique needs of children and families are met," said Mark K. Shriver, vice president and managing director for Save the Children's U.S. programs.
