Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, First Lady of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, will attend a Save the Children symposium on the challenges and opportunities facing youth in Jordan and the Middle East on Sunday, May 7 in New York City.

The event, “The Promise of Youth, Supporting Education and Economic Opportunities in Jordan and the Middle East, is sponsored by Save the Children and its New York City Leadership Council. Proceeds from the event will support the organization’s work in Jordan and the region.

The program, which will take place at the Metropolitan Club from 5:30 to 7:30pm, will feature a panel discussion moderated by ABC News commentator Cokie Roberts, a member of Save the Children’s Board of Trustees. Panel members will include actor and humanitarian Richard Gere, Dr. Isobel Coleman, senior fellow of U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations; and Dennis Walto, Save the Children country director in Jordan and Lebanon.

The panelists will share their views and experiences on how education and economic development can promote peace and prosperity in societies by offering all people – and especially young people – opportunities for impacting their community and country. Following the discussion, the panelists will participate in a question and answer session with the audience.

Save The Children has been working in the Middle East since 1953 and in Jordan since 1985, and has a long history of initiating and sustaining effective development programs that benefit children and youth. Recently, Save the Children launched two new youth initiatives, NASEEJ and NAJAH, under the patronage of Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania. The Queen attended the launch of the programs in Amman last October, and King Abdullah has met with Save the Children leaders to affirm his personal support.

“Save The Children is honored that Queen Rania and our distinguished panelists will be joining us on May 7,” said Save the Children President and CEO Charles MacCormack.

“We have a unique opportunity to engage with youth in Jordan , and elsewhere in the Middle East. With more than 60 percent of the region’s population under the age of 24, we recognize the importance of assisting teenagers and young adults in getting the education and training they need. Our May 7 event will give our supporters in New York the chance to support and learn more about these important efforts.”
